Reports | The general profile of the United Republic of Tanzania (URT) entails an area of 945,200 square kilometers of which 60,000 is inland water. The country lies south of the Equator in East Africa. The population was 23 million in 1988 (census). With an average annual growth rate of 2.8 percent, the present population is now estimated at 33 million. Women constitute 51.2 percent of the total population.
